Design Expertise
By: Bryan Lawson and Kees Dorst, Publisher: Architectural Press

6 Oct 2009

How do you become an expert designer?  This is the central question that Lawson and Dorst answer in their new book. In this new model of design expertise, excellently argued through case study, anecdote and interview, they construct a framework of ideal knowledge skills and experience that in coalescence should make for an outstanding designer. The non-linear strategy of layout and ordering of information reinforces the arguments made about creative thinking, creating a unique balance between the book’s form and content. The book is aimed at the student, educator and professional alike, with application at a project level or in the restructuring of an entire design school. Lawson and Dorst have made a highly original contribution to the perception of expertise in design, design skills and design thinking in a form that allows either fragmented reading or cover to cover study. While the book is primarily aimed at designers and architects, it is also of interest to anyone engaged in the study or application of creativity, creative processes and innovation. This book belongs on every designer and architect’s bookshelves as the emergency antidote to designer's block.
